Yesterday, all the men in my family got a haircut. You would think, based on the reactions of the 9 and under crowd that a haircut is an ordeal not at all worth enduring. I'm not sure I've ever seen such wailing and gnashing of teeth over something that is virtually painless.
I must admit, it has been a while since the clippers have come out of their hiding, what with the birth of a new baby and all. Even still, it hasn't been quite so long that even the youngest could have forgotten that haircutting is not a difficult process. It doesn't hurt, I reminded them... especially when you're sitting still.
But the wailing continued.
Daddy went first - a model of cheerful compliance. Every time I cut his hair, I think back to the early years of our marriage when, for the first time, my husband surrendered his lovely locks to his young and inexperienced scissor-holding wife. I didn't know how to cut hair, but we were poor, and haircuts were expensive, and I would learn, right? A few truly horrendous haircuts later, I did learn. Throw three more boys in the mix and I'm grateful for the skill.
Though their father tried mightily to demonstrate faith in my pain free abilities, the boys were hardly convinced. They remained in opposite corners of the kitchen, frantically pointing at their much too shaggy counterparts.
"Him first!" They shouted. "Not me next!"
Daddy's cheerful convincing might not have worked, but my sternest Mommy eyes finally drew them to the stool one at a time. And then, the real trouble began.
"I want a Mohawk," said one.
"Don't cut ANY hair off the front," said another. "I like it long... touching my eyebrows."
Sigh. Rock star haircuts, Beatles haircuts...Who knew a bunch of boys could be so vain? Not one to squelch individual expressions of style, but still aware that I have to take these boys to church with me every Sunday, I flexed my ever expanding hair styling muscles, and we compromised. Hair that can be brushed into a Mohawk, and only a little taken off the front.
In the end, everyone agreed it was hardly worth all the fretting before hand. Next time I'll have them read this post as a reminder before we start.
(See Sam's mohawk? He thinks he's the coolest thing EVER.)

They have such beautiful eyes!
They look great!
My hair cutting skills are still lacking. Although, they aren't nearly as bad as the first haircut of our marriage-- which will always be referred to as the "weed-eater haircut."
But since my skills are very VERY basic, I just use the clippers on a 2 or 3 all over their heads and then trim the sideburns and back.
Maybe they'll complain when they're older. Maybe I'll figure it out better.
My awesome wife cuts all of hair as well. It saves a fortune and even though I don't really like getting myh hair cut ever, by anyone, I'm grateful she's willing to do it.
Those are some stylin' boys!
I've tried cutting my girls' hair but while they're brave as anything, it freaks their daddy out. I have to do it when he's not home now, the big baby.
My mom literally gave my brother a bowl cut, when he was about 4. It was hilarious.
My youngest won't leave the house without his faux hawk spiked and ready. :)
Cute boys.
Tell Sam I think it is, too:) He just keeps getting cuter! Tell them all that I miss them and can't wait to snuggle again soon.
shoot - I was supposed to cut hair today - now I have to try and cram it in before leaving town tomorrow... hmmmm... SuperCuts is sounding good to me, I can probably find that much change in the couch cushions...
Good job mama! They are so handsome!
Very cute! Amazingly enough I didn't see blood or tears or anything! They survived after all!
Very cute.
I never learned to do it well. After my husband finished school I made him start going to a barber. This summer, though, the boys wanted a basic cut a razor could do, so I cut it. They are young enough to not mind the mistakes (Why is 12 still young enough to not care? I guess my boys are just weird.)
Wow - this sounds exactly like my house when I get the scissors out...except I'm not quit brave enough to cut Jareds hair yet.
Nice hair cutting skills...esp the faux hawk! They always look so cute freshly cut. We are growing my son's out "surfer style" and see how that looks. His is really wavy so we shall see!
Those are some mighty fine boys you have there. I love their new do's. I cut my son's hair but not my husbands. It's tough to get that high and tight just right. So I send him to the barber every two weeks. It costs $9.00 including the tip on base. Cheap and my husband doesn't look like a blind woman hacked at his hair with a machete.
